This is definately the most beautiful dance I’ve seen so far… not only because of the aethetics of it, but also because of its connection to the Javanese Culture. Being a Bedhoyo dance, it is most likely performed after the performers have undergone a set of rituals (including fasting and praying) and is typically accompanied by ancient Javanese spirits. I am not sure whether this is the case for this particular Bedhoyo dance, but judghing by how hypnotized I was… along with about 300 other audiences… I would not be surprised.
The Bedoyo Kusuma Handrawina dance was initiated by the current Surakarta’s King, SISKS Pakubowono XIII to mark the inauguration of PB XIII. Naturally, the dance is performed by 13 dancers, and is performed at the opening of every Kusuma Handrawina’s stage performance.
This dance represents Kusuma Handrawina Karaton Surakarta Hadiningrat’s vision and mission which prioritizes the values of the Javanese culture, particularly the Karaton Surakarta Hadiningrat Javanese culture.
